Dates: 19th November 2025
Location: online via Zoom
The International Coral Reef Society Student and Early Career Chapter (SECC) proudly presents a workshop “Confronting Parachute Science in Ocean Conservation and Research”, in collaboration with Dr. Asha de Vos. The event will take place on November 19th, 2025, from 14:00–16:00 UTC on Zoom.
Dr. Asha de Vos is an internationally recognized Sri Lankan marine biologist, ocean educator, and advocate for equitable science. Dr. de Vos will share her insights on confronting parachute science and discuss how centering Indigenous and local scientists can lead to stronger, more inclusive conservation outcomes.
This interactive workshop will include a seminar by Dr. de Vos (45 minutes + 15 minutes of questions) followed by small group discussions (45 minutes + wrap up) on actionable strategies to combat parachute science and include equitable collaboration in your own research. All are welcome to attend and participate in this vital conversation about justice, representation, and partnership in marine research.
This workshop is an ongoing effort of the collaboration between the ICRS SECC Skills and Professional Development and Equity Diversity and Inclusion Committees. Please check out our past panel in collaboration with indigenous and local coral reef scientists here: ICRS SECC Indigenous & Local Coral Scientists Panel.
