Macroalgae habitats as a subsidy of fish and nutrition for coral reefs

Presenter: Aislinn Dunne

Session: 3A - Open Session: Ecosystem functions and services

Location: Kaisen Saal

Format: Talk

We wanted to know if fish from coral reefs are using seaweed as a place to live and eat, and if fish can carry nutrients between these habitats in the Red Sea. We saw many species of coral reef fish using seaweed habitats, and found herbivorous fish on coral reefs that had the same canopy-forming seaweed in their guts. This demonstrates how fish can move between habitats and transport nutrients to coral reefs.
